By lowering residential speed limits from 50km/h to 30km/h, we can significantly improve the cycling experience without causing traffic delays for cars. This study, conducted by RMIT University, analyzed traffic stress levels across greater Melbourne and modeled the impact of reduced speed limits on bicycle and car travel. The findings are eye-opening: lowering the speed limit to 30km/h in residential areas doubled the number of bike trips on low-stress streets, creating a safer environment for children and less experienced cyclists. Dr. Afshin Jafari, the lead researcher, emphasizes that slower traffic makes cycling less stressful, encouraging more people to choose bikes as a safe and viable transportation option. This is particularly important in cities like Sydney and Melbourne, where short car trips (under 5km) are abundant and better suited for cycling. However, the study's director, Dr. Elliot Fishman, highlights a critical concern: the main reason people opt for cars over bikes is the perceived lack of safety. Fishman's research supports the idea that lowering speed limits and implementing modal filters can significantly improve cycling rates and safety.
